5 Signs That You Lack Boundaries

Updated: Jun 22, 2021

Hi My name is Simone Vee, LCSW. Let's face it we have all struggled with setting boundaries especially with family members or close friends. Boundaries are important because it helps you with creating a balance and harmony. According to a road to grow counseling.com, Defining boundaries is a process of determining what behavior you will accept from others and what you will not. Boundaries include physical boundaries, as well as emotional boundaries. Physical boundaries include your body, personal space, and privacy.

Today, I will list 5 signs that you lack boundaries

1: You have difficulty with communicating your needs and wants.

You often find it difficult to state what you mean and expressing your feelings. You also find it difficult being assertive with people you are familiar such as family or “friends”.

2: You allow people to take advantage of you.

Again, you lack assertive skills. I know you are familiar with the phrase “People will only do what you allow”

3: You have difficulty with making decisions

You spend so much time trying to please other people that you often agree with others that when it comes to making decisions, you often don’t know what to do when it comes to making important decisions.

4. You secretly feel that others don’t show you respect.

You are afraid to use the word “no”. If you do not exercise your right to say “no” again people will take advantage of you. As stated in #2 , If you don’t set boundaries, people will do as much as you allow. You have to teach people how to treat you.

5. You might just be passive aggressive.

You have moments when you want to say "no" but you say yes anyway. Then you begin to take your frustration out on the person or you displace your anger. If you set boundaries in the beginning you would not have to become passive aggressive.
