COLLABORATION OVER COMPETITION

Since I have joined the fashion industry, I learned the importance of networking. In networking I was able to meet photographers, make-up artists, hairstylists and other wardrobe stylists. In my two years of styling, every opportunity that I have been blessed with came from networking. The opportunities included being, published, being a vendor, coordinating a fashion show, and personal styling. It’s amazing to me how everyone I know through fashion, I did not know two years ago. You know the saying “Your network is your net worth”. Keep networking and attending events related to your field. You will be surprised by the people you will meet and the opportunities that you will receive .

In September of 2019 BC (Before Corona) I attended the Afrikana Film Festival on it’s opening night which featured the screening of “ The Remix: Hip Hop and fashion” that included Dapper Dan, Misa Hylton, April Walker, and Kerby Jean -Raymond. At this film festival I met Breanna, a fellow fashion stylist. I followed her on Instagram, and she reminded me of my sister-in-law. We began to discuss fashion of course and our goals for our career in fashion. We exchanged contact information and began to meet to decide on how we were going to collaborate.

We decided it would be fun to do a collaborative photo shoot highlighting our personal styles. We shot with GMAXX Photography ( McKinley Walker Jr on Facebook) in the Jac
kson Ward area of Richmond, VA and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The theme of the photo shoot was to highlight transitional pieces from Winter to Spring. As you can see, we have on layers and we are wearing spring colors which are key essentials for transitioning into different seasons. The focal point of the photo shoot was boots and street wear. We started with the boots and sneakers first and then created our outfits.

I am an avid supporter and advocate for women supporting women. I feel as though we go through similar experiences and face the same adversities especially women of color. We need to support each other. I encourage you support and empower other women. With that being said, follow and book Breanna aka Bre for your upcoming photo shoots and fashion needs. Follow her on Instagram @sostylishbre.
